Election Campaign Update

The past year has been one of change, challenge and renewed purpose.

After leaving Westminster, I’ve spent time listening to people across Falkirk East and Linlithgow about where we are as a country and what they expect from those who seek to represent them. What comes through consistently is frustration at a system that isn’t working, and a clear sense that Scotland is being held back by decisions we did not vote for and cannot meaningfully change.

A central theme has been how we break the logjam on independence. People are impatient for progress, and rightly so. But slogans alone won’t deliver independence. What’s required is serious preparation: building public confidence, laying the economic and democratic groundwork, and being honest about the steps needed to turn support into delivery. That’s the work I’ve been focused on — and the work that must continue.

Being selected as the SNP candidate for Falkirk East and Linlithgow for the 2026 Scottish Parliament election was a significant moment for me – It’s a responsibility to help prepare Scotland for independence, and to protect our communities in the meantime from the worst excesses of Westminster rule — whether that’s austerity, attacks on devolution, or the erosion of democratic norms.

I have been touched by the support of SNP members and friends who have been out campaigning, and to everyone who has helped with our fundraising and social nights.  I was delighted to be joined by First Minister John Swinney at my local adoption night in November, and by Seamus Logan MP who spoke at our St Andrews Night dinner later that month.

Politics hasn’t changed as much as people think. Voters still want honesty. They still want representatives who will explain difficult choices, and try to improve everyday lives.

The year ahead is about focus. Breaking the deadlock on independence, building the case beyond our existing supporters, and ensuring Scotland is ready — economically, institutionally and democratically — to take the next step.

Independence is not an abstract idea. It’s about having the power to protect public services, tackle inequality, and make decisions in Scotland’s interests.

Thank you to everyone who has taken part in surveys, shared views, challenged me, or offered support over the past year. This campaign is stronger because of that engagement.
