The SNP Government To Scrap Two Child Cap

The SNP Government’s decision to scrap Labour’s cruel two-child cap will lift a major burden from struggling families – including 1,910 households across Falkirk and West Lothian – as new figures reveal the scale of the damage caused by Westminster policy.

Across Scotland, the cap currently affects 29,340 households. According to Labour’s own estimates, keeping the policy in place will push 250,000 people – including 50,000 children – into poverty.

By ending the two-child cap on 2nd March 2026, the SNP Government will ensure 20,000 fewer children live in relative poverty next year.

The SNP has long opposed this unjust measure, introduced under Labour, which limits the child element of Universal Credit and Child Tax Credit to the first two children in a family – forcing parents to choose between meeting essential costs and providing for their children.

SNP Candidate Martyn Day said:
“Labour’s two-child cap is currently hitting nearly two thousand households in Falkirk and West Lothian – and almost 30,000 across Scotland. Next year, this SNP Government will scrap it, ending the harm done by Westminster and making a real difference to families.
“While Keir Starmer clings to austerity, John Swinney is leading a Scottish Government focused on eradicating child poverty – one of the defining moral issues of our time.”
