First Minister John Swinney visited Falkirk Community Hospital to announce an £85 million investment in NHS frailty services, expanding the innovative Hospital at Home service to 2,000 beds by December 2026. This initiative will provide specialist care for frail, older patients in their own homes, reducing hospital admissions, freeing up hospital beds, and tackling waiting lists.

Swinney said, “I am resolutely focused on taking the necessary action to reduce wait times and clear the blockages leading to delayed discharges across our NHS. This investment will ensure many patients can receive first class NHS care in the comfort of their own homes and not have to travel to a hospital where it isn’t required.”

The funding will also introduce frailty services in every A&E department by summer 2025, shortening hospital stays for vulnerable patients. By treating patients at home, the service reduces risks like hospital-acquired infections and delayed discharges, creating a more efficient NHS.

It not only delivers compassionate care in familiar surroundings but also eases pressure on our hospitals, slashing waiting lists and ensuring more patients get timely treatment.”

This investment, part of a record £21 billion 2025-26 Budget for Health and Social Care, underscores Scotland’s commitment to innovative NHS solutions that prioritize patient comfort and hospital efficiency.
