Bluetongue in Scotland
Bluetongue poses a serious threat to livestock and to the livelihoods of farmers and crofters across Scotland.
Following the ministerial statement on the detection of bluetongue virus serotype 3, I asked what biosecurity measures are available to Scotland’s farmers and crofters, given the presence of midges throughout the country.
The minister explained that measures to control midges are extremely limited and stressed that vaccination remains the most effective way to protect livestock.
With the disease now circulating in south-west Scotland and the risk of it spreading further, farmers and crofters need clear information, reliable vaccine supplies and timely support to help protect their animals and businesses.
