Tribute to Sir George Reid

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Sir George Reid, a towering figure in Scottish public life whose service, dedication, and compassion left a lasting mark on our nation.

In 1974, George was elected as MP for Clackmannan and East Stirlingshire, representing parts of the Falkirk Braes — an area I was privileged to represent as MP forty years later. He remained highly regarded by many of my constituents, who remembered him with great respect for his integrity, commitment, and tireless work for the people he served.

George’s career spanned journalism, humanitarian work with the International Red Cross, and distinguished service as Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, where his leadership helped shape Holyrood’s early years. His lifelong commitment to Scotland’s future, and to justice both at home and abroad, stands as an inspiration to us all.

My thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew him. Scotland has lost a remarkable public servant, and we will remember him with both gratitude and pride.
