Standing with the People of Iran

Iran is witnessing sustained nationwide protests which has now spread to more than 150 cities, with people taking to the streets day after day despite brutal repression.

The courage of Iranian citizens has been met with lethal force. Protesters have been killed simply for demanding basic freedoms and democratic rights that we would take for granted.

SNP Candidate Martyn Day said “My thoughts and prayers are with the brave women and men standing up to the regime, and with the families who have paid the highest price for freedom.  I hope that the risk and sacrifice leads to the transition of Iran into a democratic, secular republic.”

Martyn continued “My time in Parliament brought me into contact with many of the Iranian community in this country and their message was clear. Iranians reject dictatorship in all its forms no return to monarchy, no continuation of clerical rule. No to the Shah. No to the mullahs.”

The international community must listen to the voices of the Iranian people themselves and resist any attempt to divert or hijack their democratic aspirations.

The UK Government cannot remain on the sidelines. It must take concrete action against this terrorist regime.  Proscribing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps would be a clear and necessary step in holding the regime to account for violence, repression and state-sponsored terror.

The world must stand in solidarity with the people of Iran and their demand for freedom, democracy and secular government.
