SNP Bill to Strip Mandelson’s Peerage

Out on the doors this week, people aren’t just talking about the cost of living or public services – they’re talking about standards in public life and whether those at the top are ever truly held to account.

That’s why the SNP Bill to remove Peter Mandelson’s peerage matters.

This isn’t complicated. The Bill was lodged weeks ago. It’s ready to go. All it requires is for Keir Starmer to make parliamentary time for it, and Mandelson could be out of the House of Lords within days.

Instead, we’re watching excuses and delay.

Serious questions have been raised about Mandelson’s past conduct and his associations. Reports have emerged about requests for investigations, about what the Prime Minister knew and when, and about why Mandelson was kept in post despite those concerns. These are not minor matters. They go to the heart of judgement, accountability and public trust.

Yet while the questions mount, the Labour Government has done nothing to act.

Keir Starmer says Mandelson should no longer sit in the Lords. If he means it, he can prove it this week by allowing the SNP Bill to pass.

The same legislation could also be used to remove other peers whose positions have become untenable. The mechanism is there. The opportunity is there. The only thing missing is the political will from the Prime Minister.

People expect better than this. They expect action, not words.

The SNP has done the work. The Bill is ready.

It’s now up to Keir Starmer to decide whether he stands by his statements, or by his friend.
