Scots Students better off under SNP

The SNP has said “young people are thriving in Scotland in spite of Westminster” as new stats show a record level of young Scots go on to positive destinations.

Recent figures show 95.7 per cent of 2024-25 school leavers were in a positive destination three months after the end of the school year – the second highest level since 2009-10. That’s 95.7% of school leavers entering higher education, further education, employment, training, personal skills development and voluntary work.

It comes as the Labour UK Government slapped a three-year freeze on the repayment threshold for Plan 2 loans in England with the IFS forecasting “the long-run cost of issuing loans … will be negative, with graduates repaying more than they borrowed”. Meanwhile, Martin Lewis warned Rachel Reeves “I do not think it is a moral thing for you to do… please have a rethink.”

Separate analysis, published by the SNP earlier this year, revealed students in England graduated with £53,010 of debt – three times more debt than students in Scotland who graduated with an average of £17,990.

House of Commons Library analysis also revealed the student debt gap has widened since the Labour government came to power as a result of Keir Starmer’s decision to break his promises and increase tuition fees three times.
