Scotland’s Future Lies in Europe

A decade on from being dragged out of the EU, the case for Scotland aligning itself far more closely with Europe has never been clearer — or more urgent.

One year into Donald Trump’s second presidency, the fragility of relying on the UK–US axis is plain to see. Unpredictability, coercive politics and a retreat from international cooperation are now baked into that relationship. That is not a stable foundation for Scotland’s future.

Europe offers a different path: cooperation over confrontation, shared standards over chaos, and collective security over isolation. In an increasingly uncertain world, being part of a strong European family matters.

That is why the latest polling is so striking. Seventy-three per cent of people in Scotland now support rejoining the EU — significantly higher than the already decisive Remain vote in 2016. After years of economic damage, higher costs and lost opportunities under Brexit, people can see clearly where Scotland’s interests lie.

The problem is Westminster. UK parties have abandoned any serious ambition to rebuild our relationship with Europe, let alone return to the EU. Scotland’s democratic will continues to be ignored.

Independence is the route back to Europe — and alignment with our closest neighbours is far preferable to continued dependence on decisions taken in London or Washington. Scotland should be choosing partnership, stability and internationalism.
