Scotland Deserves an Energy System That Works for Us

Martyn Day joined local members for a discussion on the Cost of Living and the latest rise in energy bills.

Ofgem has confirmed yet another increase coming in January, adding to the pressure already facing households. During the General Election, Labour promised to cut bills by £300 — yet instead people are now seeing rises of around £200. Families are being pushed in the opposite direction of what was pledged.

Scotland is one of the most energy-rich nations in Europe, yet we continue to pay more than many of our neighbours because the UK’s energy pricing system is simply not fit for purpose. Successive UK Governments have failed to fix the structural issues driving these hikes.

The meeting also explored the growing misinformation blaming renewables for rising bills, when they remain the cheapest form of generation. Scotland’s resources should be working for Scotland’s people. The only credible route to fairer bills and an energy system that reflects Scotland’s strengths is to take full control of our energy future through independence.
