REVEALED: Reeves Failed to Raise Grangemouth in Secret Ratcliffe Meeting

The SNP has branded Labour’s handling of the Grangemouth refinery closure a “national disgrace” after it was revealed Chancellor Rachel Reeves met with refinery boss Sir Jim Ratcliffe just days before the doors slammed shut – and failed to even raise the crisis.

The revelation came after months of the Labour Government attempts to dodge freedom of information requests, only eventually conceding that Reeves met Ratcliffe in April 2025 – but did not discuss the threatened closure of Scotland’s only oil refinery.

Just days later, the Labour Government allowed the refinery to cease production of crude oil, leaving hundreds of Scottish jobs at risk and Scotland’s energy security undermined. Meanwhile, Westminster acted swiftly to protect infrastructure elsewhere:

• The UK Government nationalised Scunthorpe Steel to protect jobs in England.
• Ministers scrambled to save the Lindsey oil refinery in Lincolnshire, bending over backwards in attempts to extend jobs and production.
• Labour signed off on £100bn for new English nuclear power plants – with Scotland expected to foot a share of the bill.

In stark contrast, Grangemouth was abandoned without serious intervention – despite the election promisses made.

Commenting, local SNP Candidate Martyn Day said:
“This shows Scotland doesn’t even register at Westminster – Labour found billions to save industry in England, but didn’t lift a finger to save Grangemouth.”

This latest scandal is yet more proof that Scotland’s industries cannot trust Westminster – and that the only way to put Scotland first is with independence.
