It’s Scotland’s Energy

As Scotland heads into the new year, the SNP has said it is time for Scotland’s vast energy wealth to finally work for the people who live here.

For decades, Westminster has squandered Scotland’s energy resources. More than 50 years of oil and gas revenues flowed south, enriching the UK Treasury while communities in Scotland saw too little benefit.

Today, the same mistake is being repeated with renewables, with Scotland producing a surplus of energy, yet households and businesses facing some of the highest bills in Europe.

Scotland’s oil and gas sector has delivered around £450 billion to the UK government and supports jobs and supply chains across the country. Yet the Labour government is putting that industry, and the skilled workforce essential to a just transition, at serious risk.

By contrast, countries like Norway have used independence to ensure their energy wealth delivers lower costs, stronger public finances and long-term security for their people.

With control over its own energy policy, Scotland could have some of the lowest electricity prices in western Europe, cut electricity bills by more than a third, give communities a real stake in local renewables and provide a major competitive advantage for Scottish businesses.
