Supporting Democracy and Human Rights in Bangladesh

Martyn Day spoke at a vital event in Parliament coordinated by the Bangladesh Unity Forum, focusing on the erosion of democratic norms and human rights in Bangladesh.

Speakers included Bob Blackman MP, human rights barrister Steven Powles KC, and S M Rezaul Karim, a barrister from the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. We discussed growing concerns about political repression, mob violence, the targeting of minorities and women — and the alarming trend of banning opposition political parties.

Reiterating his commitment to participative democracy Martyn said:-

Bangladesh is the second-largest recipient of UK international aid. The UK has a responsibility to use its soft power to support a return to democratic legitimacy, due process, and good governance.
