Honouring the Saltire at Scotland’s Birthplace of the Flag

Martyn Day was delighted to join the Scottish Flag Trust in Athelstaneford today to mark the 60th anniversary of the Saltire Memorial. Athelstaneford is the birthplace of Scotland’s national flag, so it was a fitting place to honour St Andrew’s Day and reflect on what the Saltire represents.

The cross-party and multi-faith dedication underlined a simple truth: the Saltire belongs to everyone who calls Scotland home. It stands for a country built on community, fairness, and an open welcome.

Scotland has always been shaped by movement and migration, and our national story is stronger because of it. The Saltire flying in Athelstaneford today was a reminder that inclusiveness isn’t an add-on to our identity — it’s at the heart of it.
