Independence Means an End to Westminster’s Nuclear Waste in Scotland

Recent revelations about radioactive contamination in Loch Long are yet another example of how Westminster’s nuclear obsession puts Scotland at risk.

The Ministry of Defence has admitted that emissions of radioactive tritium from the nuclear weapons depot at Coulport have more than doubled in five years — the result of decaying infrastructure, corroded pipes, and even a major leak that sent contaminated water straight into our loch.

Scotland has never wanted nuclear weapons. Yet, under Westminster control, we host them, pay for them, and now see our waters polluted by them. Labour and the Tories alike back Trident and are doubling down on nuclear power, ignoring Scotland’s clear preference for a renewable future.

With independence, we can remove nuclear weapons from our shores, clean up the mess left behind, and invest instead in tackling the climate crisis, improving public services, and building a fairer, greener economy.

The contamination of Loch Long is a stark reminder: Westminster’s decisions come at Scotland’s expense. Independence means we choose safety, sustainability, and peace — not more nuclear waste.
