One of the SNP Government’s top priorities has always been to ensure that every young person in Scotland gets the chance to reach their full potential, no matter their background.

Through the Scottish Attainment Challenge, we are investing in schools and communities to break down the barriers that poverty creates. This work is making a real difference. The gap between the richest and poorest pupils is narrowing, and more young people than ever before are leaving school with the qualifications and skills they need to succeed.

A recent survey of almost 1,000 school staff showed that three-quarters believe the poverty-related attainment gap has reduced because of this initiative. With over £1.75 billion invested so far, and a further £200 million announced by First Minister John Swinney, this commitment is delivering tangible results.

Since 2009, the poverty-related gap in positive destinations after school has reduced by 60% – that means more young people, regardless of their circumstances, are moving on to work, training, or further study.

This is about fairness, opportunity, and supporting our young people to build the best future for themselves and for Scotland. The progress so far is encouraging, and we will keep working to close the attainment gap even further.
