The meeting in Cardiff between John Swinney, Rhun ap Iorwerth, Michelle O’Neill and Mary Lou McDonald sent a powerful message: the people of Scotland, Wales and Ireland have the right to determine their own futures.

The memorandum signed by the SNP, Plaid Cymru and Sinn Féin commits them to working together while recognising that each nation has its own distinct constitutional journey.

That cooperation matters. For too long, Westminster has treated the United Kingdom as something to be preserved regardless of the democratic wishes of its constituent nations. But no union can be sustained through denial, obstruction or the refusal of democratic choice.

Scotland’s future should be decided by the people who live here—not by a Westminster Government we did not elect. The same democratic principle must apply to every nation.

All nations should have the right to choose their own future. That is not an unreasonable demand. It is the most basic expression of democracy and self-determination.
