Backing Grangemouth with Real Investment, Not Empty Promises
The UK’s betrayal of workers at Grangemouth is unforgivable. But we said we’d do everything we could to back the community — and SNP is delivering. We’re allocating £8.5 million to support up to 460 new jobs in biotech and renewables at Grangemouth, proving that a long-term industrial future for the area is absolutely achievable.
This investment is already landing.
• MiAlgae is receiving £1.5 million from Scotland’s Just Transition Fund — match-funded by the UK Government after repeated pressure — to build its first commercial-scale bioreactor in Grangemouth. The company turns whisky by-products into fish-free omega-3, saving around 30 tonnes of fish for every tonne of algae produced and easing pressure on global fish stocks. This project alone is expected to support up to 130 direct jobs in Grangemouth and around 180 more across Scotland, injecting an estimated £53 million into our economy over five years.
• Celtic Renewables will create up to 149 jobs by 2030, supported by £6.23 million for pre-construction work on a new bio-refinery. Their technology converts waste from food, drink and farming into green chemicals used in everyday products. This approach was identified as one of the viable future pathways for the Grangemouth industrial cluster.
• A further £595,000 goes to Scottish Enterprise to accelerate essential infrastructure and planning work, making the site more attractive and investment-ready for new green industries.
• And £150,000 is being invested through the Falkirk and Grangemouth Growth Deal to ensure the community has a clear voice in delivering the Just Transition Plan.
Falkirk East and Linlithgow candidate Martyn Day emphasised:-
“All of this shows what’s possible when we invest in people, skills and innovation instead of walking away. Grangemouth can remain a major industrial hub — cleaner, greener and built on high-quality Scottish jobs. Scotland is stepping up. The UK Government should have done the same.”
