Dear {name} We all know too well that Scotland has all the energy we need but not the power to use it in our nation’s interests. Last year, among Labour’s broken election promises was a pledge to reduce energy bills by £300; instead, they have risen by nearly £200. The Nuclear Regulated Asset Base (RAB) surcharge will push bills higher still. From 1 December, the UK Government’s nuclear levy will be added to electricity bills to finance Sizewell C in England. This RAB charge makes Scottish families pay for an over-budget project Scotland neither needs nor wants. The costs are spiralling. Sizewell C’s price tag has doubled since 2020 and could reach £40–48bn—overtaking even Hinkley Point C. Independent estimates suggest around 2.5 million Scottish households will collectively pay about £300m over a decade via this levy. First Minister John Swinney has put it plainly: “Evidence shows that new nuclear is more expensive than renewable alternatives.” This levy lands while average bills rise. Instead of taxing Scots to underwrite English nuclear, ministers should back Scotland’s strengths—offshore wind, storage, tidal, green hydrogen and interconnection—so households see lower, not higher, bills. Anas Sarwar backs costly nuclear, yet has been silent on these overruns and the new charge on Scottish bills. The unfairness is obvious: energy-rich Scotland is being charged to fund a project imposed elsewhere. The SNP will continue to oppose this levy and argue for a clean, affordable system built on Scottish renewables—and for the powers to deliver it. You can hear more about our plans for Scotland at my upcoming political fundraiser with John Swinney and other leading figures on Friday 14 November at 7pm at Grangemouth Sports Complex. Tickets are £20, including food and entertainment—email me to reserve a place. Yours for Scotland,
